This book reminded me very strongly of the Giver. Which is not a bad thing. Unlike the Giver, I thought this book was overlong.
In a lot of YA books, I don't understand why the protagonist falls in love with the love interest. This book is no exception. Is "because he/she/it is different" ever enough to fall in love with someone? And in this case Xander is also "different", so I'm not sure what the attraction to Ky is. Maybe I don't remember the travails of young love enough for YA love stories to be believable.
Despite all this, I'm still interested to see what happens in the next book.
